When you are reading magazines or watching TV, you can see a lot of cosmetic advertisements. In the advertisements, you can easily find common words like natural, fragrance free, organic and alcohol free, etc. Do you really know what these words mean to you and your money? Do these words mean that the cosmetics are good to you or are they simply the advertising words?

The word natural signifies the organic ingredients. Cosmetic brands use the word natural instead of organic because it sounds better. There is no assurance for the safety of such natural ingredients, since the “natural advertisement” is not monitored by FDA. There is no research that proves the effectiveness of natural cosmetics superior to the chemical ones. Besides, when the preservatives and stabilizers are added to the natural ingredients, they simply lose their natural nature.

In fact, the safety level of such natural ingredients is relative. Certain natural ingredients like mint and rosemary indeed can be irritating. Lemon and lavender can also cause allergies. In addition, the molecular size of the natural ingredients is large, and therefore they are not absorbed by skin easily. It is the same as placing fresh vegetables onto your face, of which the effect is not guaranteed.

You may notice a lot of brands saying their products are non-irritating and therefore suitable for sensitive skin. In fact, there is no regulations or standards that can define the meaning of non-irritating. In other words, every brand can say that its product is non-irritating. But, it is the fact that you discover many people (skin) are irritated by the non-irritating cosmetics.

Alcohol is used as a solvent in many cosmetic products. Other than acting as the solvent, alcohol can help remove dead skin and cuticle on face. Ladies do not like alcohol because it can cause skin dryness and irritation. Therefore, it is not recommended for sensitive skin. But, if you find the alcohol ingredients at the end of the ingredient list, there will not be a great problem as the amount is not significant.

Finally, it comes to the fragrance free. For most of the products for sensitive skin, you may find they always mention fragrance free. Do just solely rely on such advertisement. You may need to take a look at the ingredient list. Though many products do not contain chemical fragrance, they use the extracts from fragrant plants as substitutes. The bad news is that such extracts may also cause irritation and allergy to skin.
